ALBUQUERQUE - The 18th-ranked and top-seeded UNLV baseball team advanced to the second round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament with a 10-1 victory over Air Force on Wednesday afternoon. The Rebels advance to the 3 p.m. game on Thursday, playing the loser of the evening game between BYU and New Mexico. The Falcons play at 11 a.m. on Thursday against the loser of San Diego State and Utah.
With the win, the Rebels improve to 42-15 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 15-38.
Matt Luca (5-0) picked up the win for the Rebels. He gave up one run off two hits in five innings of work. Ben Scheinbaum finished the game and picked up his second save. He kept the Falcons scoreless in four innings with four strikeouts.
Peter White hit his 10th home run and third against the Falcons this season. He went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored.
Brent Johnson led the team with three hits. He finished the game 3-for-4 with one run scored. Patrick Dobson and Peter White each went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
Eric Nielsen also added a pair of hits, gong 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Air Force was led by Adam Howes who went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
"I wish we hadn't had to go into the bullpen so early," said UNLV head coach Jim Schlossnagle. "I wish Luca could have given us more. We may have burned Scheinbaum for the weekend. We made one error and we were good at bat for the most part. Basically we did what we had to do."
