SPOKANE - The UNLV women's volleyball team finished second in the Gonzaga Volleyball Classic after defeating Boise State 3-1 (30-23, 28-30, 30-21, 30-24) on Saturday night. The Rebels dropped a 3-2 (18-30, 30-28, 30-24, 24-30, 14-16) decision to Idaho State earlier in the afternoon and finished the tournament with a 2-1 record.
Idaho State won the tournament with a 3-0 record, Boise State took second at 1-2 and Gonzaga finished fourth with a 0-3 record.
UNLV's match against Idaho State went to the wire with a 16-14 deciding game. The Rebels rebounded from a 30-18 loss in the opening game to force a fifth and deciding game.
Leiana Oswald put up her third straight 20+ kill match with 24 kills and a .305 (24-6-59) attack percentage. She also contributed seven digs, three service aces and three blocks.
Tarin Keith and Michelle Johnson tallied double-digit kills in the match, finishing with 12 and 11 respectively. Johnson also added five blocks.
Patricia Assuncao had a good match at the net, dropping six blocks on the Bengals along with eight kills and 11 digs. Nicki King finished the match with 54 assists, 12 digs and three blocks.
In the nightcap over Boise State, UNLV hit .306 (65-17-157) as a team and defeated the Broncos in four games, dropping the second game by two points.
Oswald's 23 kills led all players and continued her streak of 20+ kill matches to four.
Three other Rebels reached double-digit kills in the match. Sheila Ocasio-Clemente and Tarin Keith tallied 11, while Patricia Assuncao finished with 10. Keith added 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Assuncao also dropped a season-high seven blocks on the Bengals.
Assuncao and Oswald were both named to the all-tournament team. Idaho State's Ali Gorny was named MVP.
UNLV travels to Hawaii to take on the Rainbow Wahine and get a rematch with the Lions of Loyola Marymount before returning to the Cox Pavilion for the start of Mountain West Conference play with San Diego State.
