Rebels Drop Conference Opener

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's volleyball team opened Mountain West Conference play with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-25, 31-29) loss to San Diego State on Friday night at the Cox Pavilion.

1,187 fans attended the Friday evening match, marking the second largest home crowd in UNLV history. The previous mark of 1,251 came against Hawai'i at the South Gym in 1996.

The loss drops the Rebels to 6-6 on the season and improves the Aztecs to 9-6. UNLV was out-hit .138 (42-26-116) to .058 (40-33-121) and out-blocked 25-18.

UNLV was led by Leiana Oswald, who finished with 10 kills, five digs and a pair of block assists.

Sheila Ocasio-Clemente notched eight blocks on the night, two solo and six assisted.

Tarin Keith and Patricia Assuncao tallied nine kills each. Keith added seven digs and on block assist, while Assuncao had two digs and three block assists.

Libero Nina Franchini led the team with nine digs.

San Diego State was led by Aspen McPartland, the 2002 MWC Co-Player of the Year. She finished with 11 kills, six digs and a .316 (11-5-19) attack percentage.

UNLV continues conference play next Friday when they travel to Colorado State.
