OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - For the second day in a row, UNLV swimmers claimed first place in relay events at the Mountain West Conference championships in Oklahoma City. The Men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jonathan Hugo, Joe Bartoch, Brandon Nelms and Bjorn Eriksson posted a time of 1:19.64, which was good enough to claim first over BYU (1:20.10) and Utah (1:21.10). This is the fifth straight year that UNLV swimmers have taken first in this event.
Junior Jonathan Hugo shined individually as well, winning the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 20.29. Sophomore Joe Bartoch finished fourth with a time of 20.47, behind Utah's Jonathan Larsen (20.34) and BYU's James Bekker (20.41).
For the UNLV women, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Katie Wronn, Jessie Bradshaw, Alyson Noble and Shayna Burns took third with a time of 1:34.83, behind BYU (133.92) and Colorado State (1:34.62).
Sophomore Shayna Burns also took third-place in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:05.28, behind Colorado State's Kristen Schneider (201:11) and Katie Peck (2:04.45).
BYU leads both the men's and women's field with 110 and 108 points, respectively. Utah trails the Cougars in men's action with 109 points, followed by Wyoming (99), Air Force (85) and UNLV (70). The Rams hold the No. 2 spot in the women's events with 99 points, followed by New Mexico (96), Wyoming (89), UNLV (77), Utah (62), Air Force (50) and San Diego State (46).
Day two events begin Thursday, Feb. 19, with preliminary events at 10 a.m. CST and finals competition at 6 p.m. The MWC Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, Feb. 21, following the 6 p.m. finals events and the announcement of the individual and team awards.
