Rain Can't Stop Rebel Rally

LAS VEGAS - Four straight hours of rain couldn't stop the UNLV baseball team (4-3) from rallying to beat the Wolf Pack of Nevada, Reno(4-4) 8-6 on Friday Night.

The Wolf Pack took the lead early in the second inning after Rebel starter Matt Luca game up three straight walks to load the bases for Robert Marcial, who's two run single put the Wolf Pack on the board. Brett Hayes followed up with a single to right field that drove in two more runs, and brought the score to 4-0.

The Rebels answered back in the fourth, scoring four runs to even the game at 4-4. Third baseman Brent Johnson scored on a wild pitch and freshman catcher Justin Tellam hit a fielder's choice that scored shortstop Peter White. Second baseman Ryan Ruiz finished up the inning's scoring by hitting a 2 RBI double.

In the fifth, Tellam doubled to bring in two runs and give the Rebels their first lead of the night. The Wolf Pack picked up a run in the top of the sixth, but an RBI double by right fielder Eric Nielsen and an RBI triple by Brent Johnson gave the Rebels a bit of breathing room and brought the score to 8-5.

The Wolf Pack threatened in the ninth, scoring a run off of a sacrifice fly by Hayes, but Rebel closer Matt Minor was able to get Nevada, Reno designated hitter Erick Streelman to pop out, thus securing the win for the Rebels.

Offensively, first baseman Eddie Gill paced the Rebels by going 3-5 and scoring two runs. Ryan Ruiz was 2-4 with 2 RBIs, Brent Johnson was 2-4 with one RBI and Justin Tellam was 1-4 with 3 RBIs.

Sophomore righthander Matt Luca picked up the win for UNLV, striking out eight Wolf Pack batters in his five innings on the mound. Ben Scheinbaum also picked up two strikeouts for the Rebels in one inning of relief.

For the Wolf Pack, Rober Marcial was 2-3 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored and Chris Gimenez finished 2-4, also scoring two runs. Travis Sutton (2-1) picked up the loss for Nevada, Reno.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on KSHP AM.
