LAS VEGAS - Gary White, a former UNLV baseball player and assistant coach has been hired as director of baseball operations, head coach Buddy Gouldsmith announced Wednesday.

White was a catcher on UNLV's baseball team from 1977-80 and was a member of the 1980 team that was inducted into the UNLV Hall of Fame in 1994. He was also an assistant coach under former Rebel head coach Fred Dallimore in the 1980's and was part of five NCAA regional teams under his watch.

"Gary is more excited to be a part of the UNLV baseball program than anyone I have ever met," Gouldsmith said. "His loyalty and Rebel pride is contagious and we are very happy to have him back with the program."

White moved to Idaho in 1991 and was an assistant coach at Albertson College from 1991-98. The team was the 1998 NAIA Champions. White then came back to the Rebel program in 1998 to work under former head coach Rod Soesbe.

After his college career, White played eight seasons of semi-professional baseball in Saskatchewan, Canada. The last seven seasons he served the dual role of player-manager.

White was an associate scout with the Kansas City Royals from 1986-98 and most recently was a physical education teacher with the Clark County School District.

White is originally from Los Angeles, Calif., and played high school baseball at Van Nuys High School and El Camino Real High School.

White and his wife, Karen, have two children (Anthony, 16, and Ashley, 14).
