FULLERTON, Calif. - The pitching woes continued for the UNLV Baseball team as it lost its third straight game to the 4th ranked Titans of Cal State Fullerton 14-6 on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman lefthander, Koji Pupo, making his collegiate debut, gave up nine hits and six earned runs in two and two-thirds innings. Reliever Matt Wagner did not fare much better, also giving up six runs in less than three innings on the mound.
The Rebels struck first in the game, scoring a run in the first inning off of an RBI single by third baseman Brent Johnson who went 2-4 in the game. The lead was short-lived, as the Titans struck back, scoring twelve unanswered runs over the next five innings.
In the top of the of the seventh inning, the Rebels responded by scoring five runs, bringing the score to 12-6 before the Titans picked up a run in each of the next two innings to make the final score 14-6.
For the Rebels, Eddie Gill went 2-4, while Eric Nielsen was 1-4 with two RBIs. For the Titans, catcher Kurt Suzuki was 4-4 with 2 RBIs, designated hitter Felipe Garcia went 4-5, and center fielder Danny Dorn was 3-4 with 6RBIs.
Titan righthander, Lauren Gagnier (1-1) picked up the win, while Pupo (0-1) was credited with the loss for the Rebels.
The Rebels will return home next weekend to face the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky University in a three game series beginning on Friday, February 13th. The game times for that series will be Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m., and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
