LAS VEGAS - UNLV will open the 2004 Mountain West Conference campaign on the road at BYU this week. The Rebels are coming off a homestand where they played 16 of their last 17 games in Las Vegas.
Senior second baseman Ryan Ruiz continues to lead the Rebels offensively, batting .449 with 26 RBI and 3 HR. Senior outfielder/3B Brent Johnson also hit his 26th RBI of the season last weekend, and is batting .350 with 1 HR.
Right fielder Eric Nielsen had a big weekend against Central Michigan, finishing 5-for-10 with 3 RBI and a home run.
Righthander David Seccombe had posted a career-high for strikeouts, when he fanned 14 Chippewas last Friday. Additional strikeouts by Matt Minor and Ben Schienbaum helped the Rebels to set an all-time single-game record, with 16 total strikeouts.
Jake Vose continues to lead the Rebel pitching staff with an ERA of 3.52 while Seccombe leads the team in strikeouts, with 32.
