Top Of The Mountain Showdown

April 22, 2004

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebel baseball team (21-14, 11-3 MWC) will look to stay atop the Mountain West Conference standings as they play host to the Lobos of New Mexico (15-19-1, 11-4 MWC) for a three-game series this weekend. The game times for this weekend's series are: Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on KSHP AM 1400 and via Internet gametracker at www.unlvrebels.com.

Though still having trouble in mid-week contests, the Rebels are red hot in conference play, having won their last four MWC contests. They will look to add to that streak against New Mexico. Last season, the Rebels were 6-1 against the Lobos, including a 12-5 victory in the 2003 Mountain West Conference tournament last May.

The Rebels have been getting offense throughout the lineup, as freshman infielder Ryan Kowalski, senior third baseman Ty Soto, and freshman first baseman Chris Bonnell have all been productive lately.

Senior shortstop Peter White is hitting a remarkable .516 with 23 RBI in conference play, while senior center fielder Brent Johnson is right behind White with a conference batting average of .433 with 24 RBI in the 14 conference games.

The Rebels will look to continue their success on the mound as this weekend's two confirmed starters have combined for 11 overall wins and 6 wins in conference play. Senior righthander David Seccombe (5-1, 5.75 ERA, 52 K) will get the start on Friday, while senior southpaw Jake Vose (6-2, 4.19 ERA, 42 K) will go on Saturday. Sunday's starter has yet to be announced.

The Lobos have also been hot in conference play, winning eight out of their last nine MWC contests, including a three-game sweep over Air Force last weekend.

Freshman first baseman Daniel Stovall was named both MWC player of the week, and NCBWA National Co-Hitter of the Week for his performance against Air Force. Stovall hit .800 with 7 RBI and 3 home runs in the series.

On the mound, the Lobos will start RHP Jason Fernandez (5-3, 4.42 ERA) on Friday, LHP Danny Ray Herrera (3-4, 4.96 ERA) on Saturday and RHP Cooper Eddy (3-3, 5.64 ERA) on Sunday.

The Rebels will head to Colorado Springs on April 30-May 2 as they will continue Mountain West Conference play with a three-game series at Air Force. The Rebels will look to get even against UC Riverside as they will play a single road game against the Highlanders on May 4th.
