Fantastic First Round

April 29, 2004

SAN DIEGO - The 54th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team improved to 10-2 all-time at the Mountain West Conference tournament by easing by Wyoming 4-0 in first-round action at the Barnes Tennis Center Thursday.

The third-seeded Lady Rebels improved to 16-6 overall and 6-2 vs. MWC opponents this spring while the sixth-seeded Cowgirls fell to 10-11 and 1-7.

UNLV began the morning by taking the first two completed doubles matches for one team point. In singles play, UNLV got three straight-set victories to clinch it.

First off the court was All-MWC honoree Gyorgyi Zsiros, who downed Patricia Chien 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. Playing on Court Five, Claire Smith then finished off Amy Senko 6-3, 6-0. And when Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis defeated Jennifer Hancock 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot, play was stopped on the remaining courts. The clinching win gave All-MWC performer Ortiz-Luis her team-leading 23rd victory of the season.

"I felt we did a good job in taking care of business this morning," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "Wyoming played some solid tennis and this win sets us up for a big match on Friday."

UNLV will face 22nd-ranked and second-seeded BYU in one of Friday's semifinals. The Cougars shut out Utah 4-0 in their first-round match. The Lady Rebels have now reached the semifinals of the MWC tournament for the fourth time in the five years of the league's existence. In last season's semifinals, the Cougars upset top-seeded UNLV 4-2.
