Rebels Can't Catch Aztecs

SAN DIEGO, Calif - For the second game in a row, the UNLV baseball team (19-10, 6-2 MWC) fell behind early to the Aztecs of San Diego (18-18, 7-1 MWC), and couldn't recover as they fell 8-4 at Tony Gwynn stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Rebels fall into second place in the Mountain West Conference for the first time this season at 6-2, while the Aztecs take sole possession of first place at 7-1 in conference play.

San Diego State got on the board in the first inning as first baseman Riley Embry's single to right field drove in shortstop James Guerrero. Later in the inning, right fielder Jake Mclintock hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot over the wall in right field, giving the Aztecs an early 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Aztec left fielder Josh Hill came around to score on a sacrifice fly to left field by center fielder Landon Burt.

The Aztecs would post another run in the bottom of the third as designated hitter Brock Umbricht doubled to center field, scoring Embry and giving the Aztecs a 5-0 lead.

UNLV finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as junior right fielder Eric Nielsen doubled to right center, scoring second baseman Ryan Ruiz who had walked to get on base. Nielsen would come around to score on an RBI single by third baseman Ty Soto, pulling the rebels to within three at 5-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, as Guerrero singled to singled to left field, which would allow Burt to cross the plate and the Aztecs to regain a four-run lead at 6-2.

Senior left fielder Andrew D'Angelo pulled the Rebels to within two as he blasted a two-run shot over the wall in left center. The two-run shot was D'Angelo's first of the season.

San Diego State's Jordan Swaydan drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh as his single through the left side allowed Embry to score. Brock Umbricht would then score an attempted pick off throw of Swaydan would get past Rebel first baseman Chris Bonnell, giving SDSU an 8-4 advantage after seven.

Rebel starter Jake Vose (4-2) had a rough outing, giving up six runs off of ten hits in three and one-third innings on the mound in his second loss of the season. For the Aztecs, southpaw Daryl Harang (2-4) threw five innings, giving up two runs off of six hits while walking one and striking out six in picking up the win.

For the Rebels, Nielsen was 2-for-4 with 1 RBI while D'Angelo was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. San Diego State's Brock Umbricht was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Jake Mclintock added to RBI, finishing the game 1-for-4. Rielly Embry added three hits and an RBI for the Aztecs.

The two teams will face off again in the series finale at noon at noon on Sunday as Rebel righthander David Seccombe (3-1) will face off against San Diego State's Chris Hartshorn (4-3). The game will be broadcast live on KSHP AM 1400.
