Box Score

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team dropped both ends of its Mountain West Conference doubleheader against San Diego State on Saturday, falling 5-2 and 6-3 at Eller Media Stadium.

The Rebels (22-33, 4-10) have lost 10 straight conference games while the Aztecs (34-19, 13-3) moved into sole possession of first place.

UNLV welcomed back pitcher Jacqueline Kerrigan (18-17) in the opener. Kerrigan had missed two starts with back spasms, but earned the start in the first game. She pitched well, but gave up three runs in the fourth inning that were the difference in the game.

Tied 2-2, SDSU scored three runs in the fourth inning and held on for a 5-2 victory.

In the nightcap, the Rebels looked to lefty Becky McDonald (2-7). After a first-inning home run to SDSU's Kelcy Murphy, McDonald never held the lead despite several comeback attempts by the offense.

The Aztecs looked to reliever Celena Velasquez (14-4) for help in both games. In relief, Velasquez earned both victories on the day.

For the Rebels, Lisa Sampson was 5-for-7 on the day and Pauline Glenn went 3-for-6.

Also, as part of the day's "Strike Out Cancer" promotion, UNLV raised nearly $1000 to donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The Rebels continue their six-game home stand on Thursday, May 6, when they host BYU in a doubleheader at 5 p.m. at Eller Media Stadium.
