LAS VEGAS - The sixth-ranked UNLV men's golf team will open its season on Sunday at the Ping/Golfweek Preview, which is being held at Caves Valley Golf Club (par 70, 7,120 yards) in Owings Mills, Md., a suburb of Baltimore.
The Preview is billed as the strongest collegiate golf tournament of the fall and features the nation's top golf programs. It is a pre-cursor to the 2005 NCAA Championships, which will also be played at Caves Valley. The top-10 finishers at the 2004 NCAA Championships, four at-large invites, and the host, Loyola, comprise the field.
In addition to UNLV and Loyola, the field includes California, Florida, Clemson, UCLA, Georgia, Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Arizona, Oklahoma State, Texas, TCU, Kentucky and Pepperdine.
Competing for the Rebels will be 2004 NCAA and U.S. Amateur Champion Ryan Moore, J.C. Deacon, Andres Gonzales, Ryan Keeney and Jarred Texter.
UCLA is the defending Ping/Preview champion as the Bruins won the 2003 title by one stroke over Georgia Tech in last fall's rain-shortened (36 holes) event at The Homestead Resort's Cascades course. UNLV finished tied for seventh in that event with Ryan Moore leading the Rebel individuals tying for fifth, three shots back.
A 36-hole shotgun start begins at 8:30 a.m. EDT on Sunday and the final 18 holes will be played Monday with staggered tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.
