LAS VEGAS - The UNLV (4-1) men's swimming and diving team split a double-dual meet with two top-15 teams on Thursday afternoon, upsetting No. 14 North Carolina (3-2) 183-100 while dropping a 177.5-118.5 decision to sixth-ranked California (3-0). It was the second win over a ranked team for the UNLV men this season. On the women's side, the Rebels (5-4) fell to the No. 15 Tar Heels (5-1) 197.5 - 95.5.
Junior Joe Bartoch was the star of the day for the Rebel men, leading UNLV to wins in three events, beginning in the first event of the day. Bartoch teamed with Jonathan Hugo, Bjorn Eriksson, and Brandon Nelms to take the 200 yard medley relay in 1:31.69. Bartoch then added wins in both the 100 free (45.62) and the 100 fly (49.53), just one hundredth ahead of teammate Michael Day (49.54). Day would claim the 200 fly in a time of 1:49.64. Tamas Bosnyak won the 400 IM in 4:04.20, and the same four from the medley relay also won the 200 free relay, this time in 1:22.47.
Top performances on the women's side came from Katie Wronn, Kim Bonney, and Jessie Bradshaw. Wronn tied for first place in the 50 free with UNC's Kelsey Morrissy in a time of 24.55. Finishing with second place times was Bradshaw in the 100 back (59.95), and Bonney in the 200 breast (2:22.14). Nichole McLean took first place on both the 1m (245.03 ) and 3m (237.90) boards for the Rebels.
UNLV now takes off for Florida for its annual Winter Break training trip, and will take on Florida Atlantic on Friday, Jan. 14 at 11 am (PST) before returning home to Las Vegas.
