LAS VEGAS - UNLV sophomore Sergio Aguayo has been named one of this week's Lou Groza Collegiate Place-kicker Award Top Three Stars of the Week.
Aguayo hit two career-long 52-yard field goals during the final five minutes to give UNLV a 13-10 victory over San Diego State on Saturday to mark his second game-winning kick of the season. The Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Week has now made 7-9 attempts this fall along with 13-14 extra-point attempts. Also kicking off for the first time, 12 of his 25 attempts have resulted in touchbacks.
The other two Stars of the Week were Minnesota's Jason Giannini, who kicked the game-winner over Michigan on Saturday, and Navy's Joey Bullen, whose 46-yard field goal with a second remaining finished off the Midshipmen's comeback against Air Force.
The 2005 winner of the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award is presented by the FedEx Orange Bowl and will be announced on Dec. 8, during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Award Show in Orlando, Florida. The top three finalists for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award are honored during the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Banquet and Silent Auction on Dec. 6, at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott.
All Division I-A kickers are eligible for the Award named for NFL Hall-of-Fame Kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza. Voters for the award include Division I-A head coaches, sports writers and sportscasters, conference representatives, professional kickers, and previous Groza Award finalists.
