LAS VEGAS - Following the National Team's tryout camp last week in Lincoln, Neb., Softball Canada, the National Governing Body of Softball in Canada, selected Brittany Freight as one of its 17 athletes to play in the Pan American Championship. The championship, Nov. 26 - Dec. 4, serves as a qualifier for both the 2006 World Championship and the 2007 Pan American Championship. Joining Freight on the trip to Central America will be UNLV head coach Lonni Alameda.
The championship will be the second tour with the Canadian National Team for Freight. She was chosen as one of 17 to participate in the Canada Cup and the World Cup of Softball this summer. Although she is a native of Placentia, Calif., she is eligible to play for the Red and White since her father was born in Canada.
Alameda initially served as a consultant for Team Canada prior to the 2004 Olympics. She took more of an increased roll as she was tabbed as one of head coach Lori Sippell's assistants for the summer tournaments.
Freight joins a squad that features 10 athletes that participated for Canada this past summer in the Canada Cup and the World Cup, including standout pitcher Lauren Bay. Bay pitched collegiately at Oklahoma State and was named the Big XII Conference's Player of the Year in 2003. She was a top-10 finalist for USA Softball's 2003 Collegiate Player of the Year honor.
