LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior tight end Greg Estandia has been named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week by the Nassau County Sports Commission, the Manhesset, N.Y.-based organization announced Wednesday.
Estandia had a career-high 10 catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns in UNLV's loss to Utah on Saturday. The native of Moorpark, Calif., tied for the seventh-most receptions in a game by a Rebel. After eight games, he leads UNLV with 38 receptions for 444 yards and five touchdowns. He also has blocked two field goal attempts this fall.
This is the second such national award for a Rebel player this season as sophomore place-kicker Sergio Aguayo was named a Lou Groza Collegiate Star of the Week on Oct. 11.
The John Mackey Tight End of the Week, recognizing solely on-field receiving performance, was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends. The Nassau County Sports Commission, a non-profit organization created to enhance quality of life in "America's First Playground" through sports, is responsible for the administration of the John Mackey Award and the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The 2005 recipient of "The Mackey" will be announced mid-December and presented at the annual awards dinner on May 1, 2006.
