Scarlet Team Takes Title

Nov. 10, 2005

LAS VEGAS - The Scarlet Team used back-to-back home runs from a pair of freshman to beat the Gray Team 6-1 and win the 2005 UNLV Baseball Fall World Series on Thursday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

Xavier Scruggs and Michael Brenly, both true freshmen, took Gray pitcher Matt Wagner deep in the bottom of the third inning, spring boarding the Scarlet Team in front 2-1.

The Scarlet team added a run in the fourth and then Chad Miller laced a two-run double down the left-field line off of Gray reliever Alex Chalfant in the fifth inning that gave the Scarlet club a 5-1 lead. The Scarlet team tacked on one more run in the frame to cap the scoring.

The lone run of the night for the Gray Team came on an error by Scarlet starting pitcher Ryan Tabor in the top of the second inning. Tabor misplayed a ground ball and threw it into right field, allowing Willie Bowman to score for the Gray Team. It was a short-lived lead for the Gray Team, as an inning later Wagner allowed the pair of home runs, giving the title to the Scarlet Team.

On the night the Scarlet Team banged out 10 hits that led to its six runs while the Gray Team was limited to just two hits and the lone run. Tabor was credited with the win while Wagner took the loss.

UNLV opens mini-camp on Jan. 13th to start preparing for the 2006 season and the annual Alumni Game will take place on Jan. 28. Former Rebel players are encouraged to contact the baseball staff and participate in the event.

The defending three-time Mountain West Conference champions will then open up their regular season on the road against Pepperdine on Feb. 3. The Rebels' home opener is Feb. 24 against Eastern Michigan at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
