The UNLV women's basketball team (7-3) will end 2005 with its second straight doubleheader, though this time the Lady Rebels will follow the Runnin' Rebels' game as UNLV faces Lamar (4-4) on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm, after the UNLV-Southern Utah men's game at 1 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center. The game will be broadcast by KSHP 1400 AM on tape-delay at 6:30 pm.
The Thomas & Mack Center has been very friendly for the Lady Rebels recently, as they are 7-0 in the TMC over the past two seasons, including an upset win over 2005 MWC champions New Mexico. UNLV has won three games in the TMC this season, 72-66 over Stephen F. Austin and 65-55 over Tennessee Tech to win the Lady Rebel Shootout, and a 69-51 win over Troy on Thursday.
Though the Lady Rebels' scoring has dropped off a little this season, with just a 66.3 ppg average through 10 games to rank fifth in the MWC after leading the league in scoring in 2003-04 and 2004-05, UNLV is at the top of the league in several defensive categories. The Lady Rebels are currently leading the conference in blocks (4.70 bpg), steals (11.0 spg), and are second in rebound margin at +8.6.
While one Lady Rebel reached a milestone in the win over Troy, with senior forward Sherry McCracklin becoming the 16th Lady Rebel to score 1,000 points at UNLV, the team is closing in on a milestone as well. With their win over Troy, the Lady Rebels are now just eight wins away from their 600th win in program history, a mark only 34 schools have reached in NCAA history.
