LAS VEGAS - UNLV sophomore middle blocker Lauren Miramontes was selected by the America Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) to its All-West Region Honorable Mention squad. Miramontes was one of four Rebels to play in all 118 games in 2005, while leading the team in kills (418) and kills per game (3.54). At the net she registered 113 blocks (15 solo, 98 assisted) and averaged 0.96 per game.
By being named honorable mention, Miramontes received her fifth award of the season. In the first weekend of the `05 season, she was chosen to the Fremont Invitational's All-Tournament Team. At the University of San Diego Invitational she was given her second all-tournament team selection. On Oct. 3, she was named the Mountain West Conference's Player of the Week for her efforts on the road against New Mexico and Air Force. At the MWC's Championship banquet, she was one of two Rebels (Maria Aladjova) named to the all-conference team.
For Miramontes her numbers in 2005 propelled her into UNLV's single-season and career record books. The 118 games played are tied for the most accumulated in a single-season by the Rebels. In other single-season charts that she has placed her name are in kills (fourth), total attempts (third; 1,068), total blocks (sixth), solo blocks (10th) and assisted blocks (fourth-place tie). In the career categories she ranks in kills (eighth; 718), total attempts (seventh; 1,812), hitting percentage (eighth; .238), total blocks (10th; 192), solo blocks (fourth; 38) and assisted blocks (ninth; 157).
Overall, the MWC represented one-third of the west region's selections. BYU's Lauren Evans and Lindsy Hartsock were joined by Colorado State's Dre Downs and Utah's Shelly Sommerfeldt on the all-region team. Miramontes was teamed with Utah's Airial Salvo as two of the six representatives of the honorable mention list. Salvo, the conference's freshman of the year, was named the region's freshman of the year, as well.
