Rebels Look To Lasso Longhorns

IN THE BATTER'S BOX: UNLV heads out on the road for the first time this season as the Rebels travel to No. 1 Texas for a three game series. Game one is set to start at 12:30 p.m. (PST) at Disch-Falk Field in Austin, Texas. The Longhorns lead the all-time series against the Rebels, 1-0.

LAST TIME OUT: The Rebels dropped two of their first three games of the 2005 season at home to Cal State Northridge. UNLV lost its home opener 3-2 on Friday night, Feb. 4 and then lost a 15-inning marathon 5-4 on Feb. 5. UNLV rebounded by exploding for 19 runs in a 19-9 romp of the Matadors on Sunday, Feb. 6.

ON DECK: UNLV wraps up its road trip with a three-game set at in-state rival Nevada, Reno on Feb. 18-20 in Nevada, Reno. UNLV owns a 61-37 (.622) advantage in the series and the Rebels took two games from the Wolfpack last season at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

UNLV REBELS (1-2, 0-0 MWC): Senior outfielder Matt Fry leads the Rebels offensively with a .455 batting average with four runs scored and a double. In UNLV's 19-9 win over CSUN, Fry went 3-3 with three runs scored. CJ Lang has four hits in 10 at-bats to join Fry at .400 or better through three games. Senior shortstop Zeke Parraz leads the Rebels in extra-base hits with two doubles while Efren Navarro Jr.'s four RBI lead the team. UNLV starter Eric Brock picked up his first win of the season in the Rebels' 19-9 blowout of the Matadors, working 6.1 innings and striking out three. Alex Chalfant came out of the bullpen twice during the three-game series and didn't allow a run in five innings. Junior starter Matt Luca pitched well in his start, giving up just one earned run and two overall in five innings of work.

TEXAS LONGHORNS (3-0, 0-0 Big 12): Texas returns to Austin for its home opener against the Rebels after sweeping three games from San Diego State last weekend in San Diego, Calif. The Longhorns, ranked No. 1 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball and the College Baseball Writers Association, won by scores of 9-3, 13-5 and 7-0. Leading UT in the sweep was Seth Johnston, who hit a team high .429 with three triples, a double and four runs scored. Will Crouch and Robby Hudson both are hitting .417 after three games, and Crouch provided some pop in the lineup with two home runs. Drew Stubbs and Carson Kainer are both batting .400 as well for Texas. Buck Cody pitched 5.1 strong innings to pick up the win in the third game of the series, giving up just five hits and no runs while striking out three. Randy Boone also had an effective start, striking out eight Aztecs in five innings of work. As a team, the Longhorns sport a 2.00 ERA.
