LAS VEGAS - UNLV sophomore Chris Bonnell was named the Mountain West Conference's Player of the Week on Tuesday for his clutch hitting against No. 6 Cal State Fullerton last weekend.
The Las Vegas native went 4-11 (.363) during the three game series with a double, an RBI and two runs scored against the defending national champion Titans. None of those hits were more crucial than his game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth in the opening game of the series. Bonnell laced a single down the left field line with the score knotted at five, lifting UNLV to a 6-5 win, its first one-run victory this season in five attempts. This is the first weekly award for Bonnell.
The league's pitcher of the week honors went to Josh Cooper of Utah, who earned his first of the season in the Utes' 8-4 win over Loyola Marymount. Cooper pitched three scoreless innings, striking out five batters.
