Rebels Mauled By Golden Bears

March 11, 2005

Final Stats

BERKELEY, Calif. - UNLV scored the first run of the game against California but that was about all that went the Rebels' way Friday afternoon as they lost 13-2 to the Golden Bears at Evans Diamond.

UNLV dropped to 3-14 after losing the opener of its three-game set against Cal. The Golden Bears improved to 12-6 in 2005.

Rebel starter Derek Rodriguez gave up 10 hits and eight runs in 4.1 innings of work to take the loss, falling to 0-3. Adam Gold pitched seven innings for Cal, allowing two runs off of three hits.

CJ Lang started the Rebels on the right track Tuesday, opening the game with a single and later scoring on a Matt Fry single to put UNLV up 1-0. Cal knotted the score in the bottom half of the first behind a double by Kyle Spraker and then a single by Mike Van Winden that scored Spraker. That would be the beginning of a Golden Bear onslaught of runs, as they scored another 12 runs over the next five innings.

Cal scored two runs in the second and third innings and then added another four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to blow the game open at 13-1, putting the game out of reach. The scoring barrage was capped by a Matt Einspahr three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Rebels plated their second run of the game in the top of sixth as Justin Tellam walked and then Bird doubled to drive Tellam home. Besides the two innings that they scored, the Rebels only had runners past first base in two other innings - the fourth and the eighth.

UNLV and Cal play the second game of their series Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (PST) with Rebel left hander Koji Pupo (0-0) schedule to take the hill against Golden Bear right hander Erik Dworkis (1-2).
