TUCSON, Ariz. - UNLV blew open a tight game with five runs in the seventh inning in winning its third-straight game Tuesday night as the Rebels upset No. 10 Arizona 8-4 at Frank Sancet Field.
The win extended the UNLV's first winning streak of 2005 and it was the third straight win for the Rebels over a Pac-10 opponent, who beat Cal last Saturday and Sunday.
UNLV starter Eric Brock worked 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on six hits to even his record at 2-2. Sean Jarrett took the loss for the Wildcats, as he gave up all five runs in the pivotal seventh inning. UNLV improved to 6-14 with the win while Arizona fell to 14-7.
With the score knotted at three heading into the top of the seventh inning Ryan Kowalski and CJ Lang started the frame with singles. After a fly out Rebel shortstop Zeke Parraz added another single that scored Kowalski, breaking the tie. Justin Tellam then fouled out for the second out of the inning but the Rebels weren't through.
Ryan Bird reached on a bunt single and then a throwing error by Jarrett allowed Lang and Parraz to score, pushing the UNLV lead to 6-3. Chris Bonnell then drove in Bird with a single, and after a wild pitch, Bonnell scored on a single from Matt Fry, extending the Rebel margin to 8-3. UNLV had 11 hits on the night and 10 of those were singles. The lone extra-base hit of the night came off the bat of Bonnell in the second inning, with the Rebels trailing by one.
Arizona jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Trevor Crowe hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first inning for the Wildcats. Bonnell had an answer in the second, sending a ball over the center field fence for a solo shot that tied the game at one. It was the first round tripper of the season for Bonnell.
UNLV grabbed its first lead of the game in the fourth, scoring two runs in the top of the inning on two singles and two hit batsmen. JC Sibley led off the inning with a single and Parraz followed with one of his own. After a Tellam walk, Bird hit a sacrifice fly that knocked in Sibley and Parraz later scored after Braden Walker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Arizona tied it again in its half of the fourth, scoring two runs with two outs. Nick Hundley and Chris Frey each hit a double to score one run. Frey then scored on a double-steal. The Wildcats added another run in the bottom of the seventh but could not get any closer as UNLV's bullpen didn't allow an earned run over the final 3.1 innings of Tuesday's game.
The two teams play again Wednesday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled to be thrown at 2:00 p.m. (PST).
