LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior Matt Luca was named the Mountain West Conference's Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday for his strong outing last Sunday against Cal.
Luca allowed just one unearned run in 6.2 innings of work last Sunday, striking out five batters and walking three as he did his part in the Rebels' 7-4 win. Luca picked up his first win of 2005 and in the process lead the Rebels to their first winning streak this season.
Luca is fourth in the MWC in strikeouts with 23 and ERA with a 3.25 mark through six starts and the Galveston, Texas native is third in the league in innings pitched with 36.0. This is the third MWC weekly honor for Luca.
BYU junior third baseman Brandon Taylor and New Mexico sophomore outfielder Chris Carlson were named Mountain West Conference Co-Players of the Week.
