TUCSON, Ariz. - The UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 11-under-par 277 on Sunday at the National Invitational Tournament being played at OMNI Tucson National (par 72, 7,094 yards) and trail team-leading TCU by just one shot.
TCU (276, -12) and UNLV were the only two teams to shoot double-digit under-par scores during Sunday's first round. New Mexico, Arizona State and Arizona's "B" team all shot 8-under 280 and are tied for third place.
Individually, the Rebels received strong rounds from Ryan Keeney and Travis Whisman, who are both in a six-way tie for second place after shooting 5-under 67s. TCU's J.J. Killeen holds the individual lead with a 6-under 66.
Andres Gonzales was the only other Rebel in the top 20 after the first day as he sits in a 12-way tie for 17th at 2-under 70.
Other Rebel players were Sam Hunt (73, +1; T48th) and Matt Kinsinger (74, +2; T54th).
Play continues on Monday and concludes Tuesday with 18 holes each day.
