Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - UNLV was held to just three hits and its defense committed a season-high six errors Tuesday night in an 11-2 loss to visiting UC Irvine in a non-league game at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

The Anteaters rapped out 15 hits to the Rebels' three, which was a season low. UNLV dropped to 11-18 overall but remained in a first-place tie with BYU in the Mountain West Conference with a 5-1 league record. UCI improved to 13-11 overall. Eric Brock (1-3) took the loss for the Rebels, giving up five runs, three earned, in 3.2 innings of work. Gary Nakashima (1-0), one of seven pitchers used by the Anteaters, earned the first college win of his career.

UNLV's defensive miscues started right away in the opening inning when Ollie Linton led off the game for UCI with a single, then advanced all the way to third on a throwing error by Brock. Linton was driven in on a ground out by Daniel Miramontes for the game's first run.

After a single by Danny McCarthy led off the top of the second inning, Cody Cipriano hit a routine double-play ground ball to Rebel shortstop Zeke Parraz. The senior booted the ball for an error and then made an errant throw to first for another, moving the runners to second and third. On the next pitch Jaime Martinez cleared the bases, drilling the ball over the leftfield fence for a three-run home run and a 4-0 UCI lead. After a groundout, Parraz made another poor throw to first on a ground ball for his third error of the frame, but Brock was able to work out of the inning without allowing any more runs.

The Rebels put their first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the second, using an UCI error, a hit batter and a walk to load the bases with one out. CJ Lang then hit a fielder's choice ground out that scored a run, but UNLV could do no more damage and trailed 4-1.

UCI tacked on another run in the third and fifth innings on RBI singles and then scored two in the sixth on a two more RBI singles to extend its lead to 8-1. Erik Johnson added another run in the eighth on a solo home run and UCI scored another pair of runs in the ninth.

UNLV's second run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth. Chris Bonnell led off the inning with a single and after a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt moved him to third, he scored on another wild pitch. The Rebels only other hit of the night was a single off the bat of Sean Rand in the ninth.

The Rebels resume MWC play this weekend with a three-game home series against San Diego State with the first game this Friday at 6:30 p.m. (PST) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
