TUCSON, Ariz. - The UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 9-under-par 279 on Tuesday at the National Invitational Tournament being played at OMNI Tucson National (par 72, 7,094 yards) and finished the tournament in a tie for third place.
TCU (276-283-279-838, -26) led the tournament wire-to-wire and finished at 26-under to capture the team title. Arkansas (282-278-281-841, -23) finished in second place, three shots back at 23-under. UNLV (277-287-279-843, -21) and Arizona (281-281-281-843, -21) tied for third, five shots back, while Texas (286-276-282-844, -20) rounded out the top five.
Matt Bortis (69-67-68-204, -12) won the individual title at 12-under by one stroke over Pepperdine's Michael Putnam (67-72-66-205, -11) and Texas' Matthew Rosenfeld (69-67-69-205, -11), who both tied for second.
Ryan Keeney (67-69-72-208, -8) led the Rebels individually and tied for seventh place. Travis Whisman (67-74-68-209, -7) finished tied for 10th and Andres Gonzales (70-71-71-212, -4) was the third Rebel to place in the top 20 as he tied for 16th.
Other Rebel players were Matt Kinsinger (74-73-68-215, -1; T31st) and Sam Hunt (73-76-74-223, +7; T63rd).
UNLV's next action will be in Tempe, Ariz., at the Thunderbird/ASU Invitational on Friday-Saturday, April 8-9.
