SUNRIVER, Ore. - UNLV men's golf team fired a final-round 10-under 278 during Saturday's final round of the Mountain West Conference Championships at the Crosswater Course at Sunriver Resort (par 72, 7,568 yards) but the Rebels finished second to New Mexico by three strokes.

The Rebels began Saturday's final round 11 strokes behind the Lobos and that lead was too much for UNLV to overcome despite the team's strong play Saturday. UNM finished the tournament with a score of 856 (285-285-286, -8) after carding a score of 286 (-2) in the final round of play. UNLV wrapped up the MWC Championships with a score of 859 (294-287-278, -5) and BYU came in third with a score of 861 (294-287-278, -2). San Diego State (292-293-290-875, +11) and Colorado State (297-292-297-886, +22) rounded out the top five.

Nick Becker of BYU won medalist honors with a three-round score of 208 (71-69-68, -8) and UNM's Spencer Lavin took second with a 209 (69-70-70, -7). Ryan Moore of UNLV (74-70-69-213, -3) and Ron Harvey Jr. of BYU (71-72-70-213, -3) finished in a tie for third.

Rebel Ryan Keeney and UNM's Jay Choi finished tied for fifth to round out the top five. Keeney carded a three-round total of 214 (73-72-69, -2).

Other Rebel finishers included Jarred Texter who finished tied for ninth with a 218 (76-70-72, +2), Andres Gonzalez (73-76-70, +3) and Travis Whisman (74-75-70, +3) who both finished in a four-way tie for 12th with a 219.

After the conclusion of the championships the league announced the All-Conference team and league awards and Moore was named the MWC Player of the Year for the second-straight year. Texter also earned recognition from the league as he was named the MWC Freshman of the Year. Whisman joined Moore on the All-Conference team.

Moore led the Mountain West Conference, and the nation, with a 68.95 stroke average. The senior from Puyallup, Wash., is a four-time all-MWC selection and a two-time All-American. Moore won three of the seven collegiate tournaments he played in this season and finished in the top six in the other four. He is a finalist for the Ben Hogan Award for the third straight year, presented annually to the top collegiate men's golfer.

Texter garnered freshman of the year honors after posting a 73.00 stroke average this season and finishing tied for ninth at the 2005 MWC Championship with a two-over 218.
