Final Stats
PROVO, Utah - As in the first game of UNLV's doubleheader with BYU, the Rebels were down two runs heading into the top of the ninth in the second game Friday night against the Cougars. But this time UNLV baseball could not come back and fell 11-9 to BYU on Friday night at Larry H. Miller Park.
The Rebels had a chance though, with Zeke Parraz at the plate with the bases loaded and two out, but the senior shortstop popped out to end the game.
UNLV fell to 26-25 overall, 20-6 in the Mountain West Conference, two games ahead of second place BYU. The Cougars improved to 34-16-1, 18-8 in league play.
BYU got on the board first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning off of UNLV starter Koji Pupo. The lead was short lived though as the Rebels scored nine runs between the third and sixth innings to grab a 9-7 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
During the Rebels scoring run in the middle innings CJ Lang had an RBI triple in a two-run third inning, Chris Bonnell had a two-run double in a three-run fourth, Matt Fry had a two-run single in a three-run fifth and Lang capped the UNLV run with a RBI single in the sixth.
The Cougars came back though in their half of the sixth inning, scoring three runs to regain the lead, with the big blow coming on a Apana Nakayama two-run home run. BYU added another run in the seventh for an 11-9 lead.
Lang finished the nightcap going 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored and Bonnell had three RBI as well. Alex Chalfant took the loss for UNLV, evening his record at 1-1. Brandon Christiansen earned the win for BYU, allowing just one run over the final four innings of the game.
The two teams wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon with the game set to start at 12:00 p.m. (PT) as Derek Rodriguez (4-4) takes the hill for UNLV against the Cougar's Blake Torgerson (6-2).
