LAS VEGAS - UNLV baseball senior Matt Fry led the Rebels to a sweep of Utah and the Mountain West Conference regular season title in his final three home games last weekend and on Monday he was named the MWC Player of the Week.
It was the first MWC weekly honor for Fry in his UNLV career, and the outfielder from Anaheim Hills, Calif., went out with a bang in his final games at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
In the opening game of the series with Utah, Fry hit two home runs, including a game-winning two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth to lead UNLV to a 10-4 win. He finished that game with five RBI and two runs scored. His first home run of the game was a solo shot in the bottom of the third. In game two he was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in a 9-7 win. Fry went 2-for-5 in the series finale, with two RBI and a run scored as UNLV won 13-6. Fry finished the weekend with nine RBI and had seven hits in 11 at-bats. His big weekend helped UNLV clinch its second MWC regular season title in three years.
The league's pitcher of the week was Brett Douglas of San Diego State, who held BYU scoreless over eight innings of work last Friday as the Aztecs won 12-1. Douglas struck out five and allowed just seven hits to earn the win.
Of the eight UNLV weekly winners, junior pitcher Matt Luca and sophomore first baseman Chris Bonnell earned the honor twice this season. The Rebels open up MWC Tournament play on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. (PT) at Franklin-Covey Field in Salt Lake City, Utah.
