LAS VEGAS - UNLV baseball was placed in the Tempe Regional in Tempe, Ariz., and will play Coastal Carolina on Friday at 2:00 p.m. (PT) to open up play in the NCAA Baseball Tournament, the NCAA announced Monday.
Host Arizona State and East Carolina are the other two teams in the regional and they will play each other at 7:00 p.m. at Bobby Winkles Field at Packard Stadium on the campus of ASU.
The Rebels, who are 34-27 overall and earned the Mountain West Conference's automatic bid by winning the league tournament this past Saturday with two wins over BYU, will be playing in their third-consecutive regional and 10th overall and will be the No. 4 seed in the double-elimination bracket. Coastal Carolina (48-14) earned the top seed, winning a school record 48 games and the regular season title in the Big South Conference. The Chanticleers lost in the second championship game to Winthrop 13-7 in the Big South Tournament. Arizona State (34-22) is from the Pac-10 conference and has the second seed while East Carolina (35-24) is seeded third and is from Conference USA.
The winner of the regional will advance to a Super Regional and will play the winner of the Fullerton Regional, which includes defending champion Cal State Fullerton, Harvard, Missouri and Arizona.
The Rebels will be playing in Tempe for the fourth time in their 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, with their most recent trip coming in 2003 when they went 2-2. UNLV opened that regional with a 14-12 loss to New Mexico State but the Rebels then beat Central Connecticut 22-3 and New Mexico State 16-10 to advance to the championship game. They lost to Arizona State 16-1 to finish second in that regional.
UNLV's first NCAA Tournament game was played in Tempe against Arizona State back in 1978, as the Rebels beat ASU 17-10. The Rebels lost their next two games in that regional, 5-4 to Gonzaga and 30-5 to ASU. In 1988 the Rebels went 1-2, losing to Central Michigan 10-7, beating Evansville 2-1 and then losing to ASU 28-8. UNLV is 4-6 in NCAA Tournament play in Tempe and 9-18 overall.
