Sibley Snares Weekly Honor

LAS VEGAS - JC Sibley was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week following his record breaking performance this past weekend against Air Force the league announced Monday.

Sibley set the MWC and UNLV record for hits in a game with seven and also set the Rebel record for consecutive hits with nine in UNLV's sweep of the Falcons in Colorado Springs, Colo. Behind the play of Sibley the Rebels moved into sole possession of first place in the MWC, two games ahead of second-place BYU. It was the first weekly MWC honor for Sibley.

Sibley, from Las Vegas, Nev., was 2-for-5, with a home run, two RBI and a run scored in a 20-1 victory in game one of the series. In game two of the set Sibley went 7-for-7 with four doubles, two RBI and four runs scored, propelling UNLV to a 24-15 win. His seven hits set a new single-game MWC and UNLV school record, while his four doubles tied a conference single-game high. In the Rebels' 17-3 win in the series finale, Sibley went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. For the week, Sibley was 11-for-15 (.733) from the plate with a home run, four doubles, four RBI and seven runs scored.

Danny Ray Herrera of New Mexico was named the MWC Pitcher of the Week as he held BYU, one of the top hitting and scoring teams in the nation, hitless and scoreless through 6 1/3 innings in the Lobos' 4-1 victory Friday. In 9.0 innings on the mound, Herrera fanned a season-high eight batters while scattering three hits to collect his sixth win of the year.
