LAS VEGAS - UNLV's Marissa Nichols has been invited to participate in September's National Team selection camp at the U.S. Olympic training center in Chula Vista, Calif. The Amateur Softball Association, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States and USA Softball officially sent out invites to 34 other players to attend the camp from Sept. 6-10.
Nichols' invitation is the second such invite by ASA and USA Softball this year. On May 10, Nichols was one of 47 athletes selected to compete for positions on Team USA's National Team and an Elite Team. Nichols made the cut and was placed on the Elite Team which participated in the Canada Cup (Surrey, British Columbia) and the Intercontinental Cup (Madrid, Spain).
In her two stints of international play, Nichols racked up numbers somewhat reminiscent of her freshman season as a Rebel. She started eight of 12 games and helped the Elite Team to a 16-2 2005 season. She made the most of her opportunities at the plate, hitting .481 with 13 hits in 27 at-bats. She hit her first international home run in the Intercontinental Cup's championship game over Italy. Besides her home run, she mixed in five doubles and seven singles. She knocked in six RBI, while crossing the plate five times herself. Two impressive numbers that stick out in her 12 games of play are her slugging percentage (.777) and her on-base percentage (.500).
