LAS VEGAS - The 18th-ranked San Diego Toreros (7-1) swept past the Rebels (3-6) Thursday evening in the opening day of the University of San Diego Invitational. The Toreros notched scores of 30-17, 30-23, 30-17 in their home-opening victory at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
USD took advantage of a 54-to-30 kill margin to dispose of the Rebels. Although UNLV hit for a .154 average, the second-lowest tally of the season, USD hit at a .385 clip. The Toreros servers threw down 13 aces, including six by Moira McCarthy. The 13 aces given up by the Rebel defense set a season match-high for an opponent and were seven more than the previous high of six.
The nationally-ranked Toreros were led by 15 kills from Kristen Carlson and 13 from Christie Dawson. Dawson held a .765 hitting percentage in the match as her 13 of her 17 attacks registered for kills. Dawson's high mark was helped by no registered errors. Lindsey Sherburne notched the only double-double of the match with her 43 assists and 14 digs. Jeanne Fairchild topped all players with 20 digs in the match.
The Torero defense held the Rebel offense in check as UNLV suffered its lowest kill output of the season and the first time all year that no Rebel amassed double-digit kill figures. Lauren Miramontes led all Rebels with eight kills. Melody Nua had the highest hitting percentage with a .429 as she scored on three kills with no errors in seven attempts. Nua set up 17 of the 21 assisted kills, while Jada Walker dug out 19 Torero attacks.
Next up for UNLV is a noon match Friday against the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks. The Lady'Backs enter the contest with a record of 6-2.
