LAS VEGAS - UNLV (5-7, 1-0 Mountain West Conference) dominated its conference home opener against the visiting Wyoming Cowgirls (5-5, 0-1 MWC). The Rebels expanded their lead to two games in the overall series improving to 11-9. Maria Aladjova and Brittani Lumsden led the attack against the Cowgirls giving the Rebels a season-high hitting percentage of .325. Aladjova and Lumsden tallied 34 of UNLV's 54 kills. UNLV took the three-game match with scores of 30-22, 30-18, 30-26.
UNLV's .325 hitting percentage was aided with each game above the .234 mark. Wyoming hit for a .209 average, with two games in the .200's, but a game-two low of .091 dropped its total.
On the attacking side of the net, Aladjova and Lumsden nailed 17 kills apiece. Aladjova was errorless against Wyoming as she hit for a .708 clip. Her .708 hitting percentage is tops amongst all Rebels in 2005. Lumsden racked up her fifth double-double of the season and second-consecutive, as she dug out a team-high 17 Cowgirl attacks. Melody Nua assisted on 42 kills, while Jada Walker helped with 12 digs.
Wyoming got eight kills apiece from Lauren Scott, Angie Hellbaum and Rachel Smith. Scott led the team with a .545 hitting percentage. Jamie Schilling assisted on 34 of the team's 35 kills. Carissa Lee (12) and Samantha Eley (10) racked up double-digit digs in the match.
Up next for UNLV is a match versus the five-time defending MWC Champion, Colorado State (7-3, 1-0 MWC). The Saturday evening match begins at 7 p.m., at the Cox Pavilion.
