LAS VEGAS - Host UNLV combined to go 7-2 in singles and doubles play at the first day of the school's Women's Tennis Fall Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Friday.
Playing five flights of singles and four flights of doubles in the tournament season's first action, the Lady Rebels were led by Elena Gantcheva. The 24th-ranked sophomore made quick work of Zana Masnic of Oklahoma State 6-0, 6-2 to advance in singles and set up a semifinal showdown vs. 43rd-ranked Sara Foster of Texas A&M.
Other schools with players in the tournament were Tulsa and Gonzaga.
"Overall, today was a good day for UNLV vs. some great competition," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "We also saw some things we need to work on and we look forward to the rest of the weekend."
Also winning for UNLV were Sharon Marin in Flight Two, Claire Smith and Linda Tempelfelde in Flight Four, and Mery Constanti in Flight Five.
In doubles play, Smith and Tempelfelde advanced in Flight Three and Cindy Treber and Constanti moved into Saturday's final of Flight Four.
Semifinals in singles and finals of doubles will take place Saturday with the singles championships set for Sunday.
