LAS VEGAS - UNLV (2-3) jumped out early on the Santa Clara Broncos (2-0) with a win in game one, but weren't able to keep the momentum going as SCU rallied to win games two through four for the match win. The Rebels had reeled off seven-straight game wins, including four in a row at the Holiday Inn-Costa Mesa Sunset Classic in Irvine, Calif., until the Broncos took game two. SCU won the match, played at Crawford Court, with scores of 27-30, 30-27, 30-26, 30-21. Maria Aladjova and Melody Nua were named to the Classic's All-Tournament Team.
For the first time this season, two Rebels registered double-doubles as Brittani Lumsden tallied 17 kills and 12 digs, while Nua had 46 assists and 11 digs. This was the second-consecutive match that Lumsden has led the offensive for UNLV. In game one of the Classic Friday evening, she had 16 kills against UC Irvine. Aladjva tied Lumsden with 17 kills of her own, while tying the match-high hitting percentage of .483. Lauren Miramontes rounded out the double-digit kill players, as she threw down 11. Jada Walker led the team in digs, as UNLV had three others register double-digit numbers in the category (Lumsden-12, Nua-11, an Kristin Koochi-10).
The Broncos had four attacking players in double-digits. Kim McGiven had a match-high 21 kills. Brittany Lowe (10), Cassie Perret (12) and Anna Cmaylo (16) rounded out the double-digit kill leaders. Cmaylo, tied UNLV's Aladjova for the match-high .483 hitting percentage. Crystal Matich threw up a match-high 59 assists, while Caroline Walters had 23 digs.
For the third-straight match UNLV hit in positive figures in each game, but on this occasion was unable to come away with its third-straight victory. Overall, UNLV hit for a .250 percentage, but SCU topped that figure with a .362 tally of its own. The team that posted the highest hitting percentage in each game wound up winning that game.
Up next for UNLV is its own tournament, the UNLV Volleyball Classic, to be held in the Cox Pavilion on Sept. 9 and 10. Joining the Rebels in Las Vegas will be Illinois, Rutgers, Long Beach State and Louisville. UNLV will play each team, except Louisville. Friday's matches will begin at 3 pm (Louisville versus Illinois), while Saturday's will start at 11 am (Rutgers versus UNLV).
