LAS VEGAS - And then there was none.
With the three remaining top players all being upset, two unseeded players will face off in Sunday's singles final of the Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV.
UNLV sophomore Elena Gantcheva, ranked eighth in the nation and seeded fourth in this tournament, suffered a rare home loss in the quarterfinals as Stanford's Celia Durkin fought off a match point to force a third-set tiebreaker and ultimately prevail 6-1,1-6,7-6 (7-4).
In flight two, Linda Tempelfelde, who was the host school's other remaining singles entry, suffered a similar fate as she lost in a third-set tiebreaker to Laila Abdala of Arizona State, 6-7, 6-2, 7-6.
"Overall, it was good tournament for us," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "We lost two heartbreakers today but they will provide valuable experience for us down the line."
Also, UNLV's lone doubles team of Cindy Treber and Mery Constanti fell 9-7 in the semifinals of the flight two draw.
In a tournament field that boasted five of the nation's top 10 singles players, it will be 69th-ranked Durkin facing No. 94 Laura Gordon of UCLA in the championship, which is set to begin at 11 a.m.
Doubles will start the day at 10 a.m. with a semifinal match featuring top-seeded Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey of Stanford vs. Anca Anastasiu and Judy Devera of USC.
The other semi will pit fourth-seeded Amanda Fink and Carine Vermeulen of USC vs. second-seeded Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke of Arizona State. The doubles championship match will then follow.
The tournament is free and open to the public.
