Rebels Fifth After Preview's First Round

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The UNLV men's golf team is in fifth place after Monday's first round of the PING Preview played at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club's Gold Course (par 70, 6,809 yards), which also will host the 2007 NCAA Championship.

Georgia is the only team to finish under par during the first round as the Bulldogs turned in a one-under-par 279 to lead the field by a stroke. Texas A&M shot even-par 290 and is followed by Florida in third at one-over 281. Oklahoma State is fourth at 2-over 282 and UNLV rounds out the top five at 3-over 283.

Individually, there is a three-way tie for first place at 3-under 67 between Robert Gates of Texas A&M, Arizona State's Niklas Lemke and Pablo Martin of Oklahoma State. UNLV junior C.J. Gatto is part of a four-way tie for fourth place, just one shot back of the leaders at 2-under 68.

Other Rebel scores: senior Ryan Keeney (71, +1; T17th), freshman Brett Kanda (72, +2; T28th), junior Jarred Texter (72, +2; T28th) and sophomore Eddie Olson (76, +6; T56th).

The tournament will continue with 18 holes and Tuesday and conclude with 18 on Wednesday.
