LAS VEGAS - UNLV football sophomore defensive tackle Jacob Hales was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.
This is the first ESPN The Magazine academic honor for Hales, who is originally from Las Vegas, Nev., and prepped at Las Vegas High School. He currently has a 3.72 GPA and is majoring in Spanish. Hales also served an LDS Mission in Houston from 2002-2004 before enrolling in UNLV.
On the field Hales has eight solo tackles and nine assists for 17 total takedowns and he also has 1.5 tackles for loss, including a sack. Hales has played in seven games, making four starts, and he also missed two games this year due to a staph infection in his knee.
The academic all-district squad was voted on by CoSIDA members from within the District 8 states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington and the province of British Columbia. Hales will now appear on the national ballot with a chance to earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America football honors. The national team will be announced on Nov. 30.
