Pair Of Rebels Picked By Sporting News

Dec. 8, 2006

LAS VEGAS - UNLV wide receiver Ryan Wolfe has been named Sporting News Second Team Freshman All-American while teammate Jason Beauchamp received honorable mention at linebacker.

Wolfe, the 2006 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and first-team all-league pick, was also named a freshman All-America earlier in the week by Scout.com. The record-setting rookie out of Santa Clarita, Calif., became the first-ever freshman to lead the MWC in receiving yards and shattered multiple school marks. He currently ranks 25th in the nation with 75.92 receiving yards per game as well as 55th with 4.58 receptions per game.

Wolfe's total of 911 yards shattered the MWC freshman single-season receiving yards record of 771, which was set by BYU's Austin Collie in 2004. Wolfe also tied the MWC mark for yards in a game with 176 on a career-high nine receptions vs. New Mexico on Oct. 14, which marked the second of his three 100-yard games this fall.

Beauchamp, a redshirt, played in all 12 games and finished third on the team with 69 total tackles. He ranked third on the squad with 6.0 tackles-for-loss and was third with 3.5 quarterback sacks. The San Diego native also forced one fumble and recovered another.
