LAS VEGAS - The 59th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team won its third straight match, 6-1 over Southern Miss on a sunny and warm February Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels improved to 4-1, which marked their best start since posting the same record at the beginning of the 1998 season. The Golden Eagles fell to 0-2 on the young season.
UNLV began the afternoon by rallying on two courts to sweep three doubles matches for one team point.
In singles play, senior Joel Kielbowicz swept Marc Lux 6-1, 7-5 at the top position, Romain Massaro eased by Juan Garzon 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, Brett Hunter won a marathon super-tiebreaker to emerge victorious over Domagoj Anic 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10) at No. 3, freshman Elliot Wronski improved to 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Reid Bourgeois at No. 5, and Jonathan Hooper won 6-4, 6-2 over Andrew Poole on court six. David Campbell lost his super-tiebreaker at the fifth spot as USM's Dylan Mezey gave the visitors their only point to end the match.
"We were down in doubles on courts one and three and came back to sweep, which gave us a lot of momentum going into singles" UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "Beating a feisty opponent was a nice way to start the weekend but now we have to be ready for these next two."
The Rebels host New Mexico State on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. and then UC Riverside on Sunday at 10 a.m.
