SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The 59th-ranked UNLV men's tennis team improved to 7-2 overall with a 6-1 win over Cal Poly on a chilly Saturday at the Wathen Tennis Center.
After the teams endured a two-hour rain delay, the Rebels used their depth in doubles play to eke out the point. The Mustangs, who fell to 2-4, earned their win at the top position. Winning 8-6 for UNLV at the second spot was Brett Hunter and Elliot Wronski while Romain Massaro and Wesley Burrows took their match 8-4 at No. 3 to improve to 10-2 on the year.
In singles play, top Rebel Joel Kielbowicz was upended by 55th-ranked John Nguyen, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot. However, UNLV took both other three-set matches en route to winning at Nos. 2-6: Massaro downed Matt Baca 7-5, 7-5 at the second spot, Wronski rallied past Brett Van Linge 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3, Hunter swept Fred Dewitte 7-6, 6-4 at No. 4, Jonathan Hooper got by Kyle Royball 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 and David Campbell beat Aaron Elburt 6-3, 6-4 on court six.
The Rebels now will brave record Southern California cold to take on No. 75 Oregon in a neutral-site match on Sunday in Santa Barbara.
