LAS VEGAS - The 37th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team broke a two-match losing skid by posting its fifth shutout this season with a 7-0 final over Northern Arizona in the first round of the Lady Rebel Classic Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels only lost one set en route to improving their record to 5-2 overall, including 5-0 at home this season, while the Lumberjacks fell to 3-4.
UNLV will face 73rd-ranked Boise State in one of Saturday's semifinal matches. The Broncos got by Loyola Marymount 4-3 to also move into the winners' bracket. On the other side of the draw No. 47 Fresno State shut out Montana 7-0 and will next meet Oklahoma State, which downed UC Santa Barbara 5-2 on Friday. The championship of the eight-team event is set for noon on Sunday.
Against NAU, the Lady Rebels began the morning by sweeping three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. In singles play, super sophomore Elena Gantcheva improved to 21-7 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Susan McClelland at the top spot.
Also winning for the hosts were Nikol Dimitrova on court two, Cindy Treber at number three, Claire Smith on court four, Linda Tempelfelde at number five and Mery Constanti at the sixth position.
"It's nice to get back on the winning side of the scoreboard," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "I felt we played a solid match but now we have to be ready for a tough Boise State team tomorrow."
