MALIBU, Calif. - UNLV baseball (1-2) lost 8-2 to No. 13 Pepperdine (2-1) on Sunday afternoon at Eddy D Stadium to wrap up the Rebels' first three-game series of the 2006 season.
The Rebels committed three errors and allowed the Waves to score eight runs in the first four innings of the game, ending any chances that UNLV could take two of three from nationally-ranked Pepperdine.
Things unraveled for the Rebels in the second inning as Blake Gailen gave up four runs, three of them earned before he was chased in his first start after just 1.2 innings of work. Jabe Beard came in out of the bullpen a day after he pitched two scoreless innings in the Rebels' 6-3 win Saturday but he was not as effective Sunday. Beard was tagged for one run in the third and then another three in the fourth for an 8-0 Pepperdine lead.
UNLV got on the board in the fifth inning when Chad Miller singled in Ryan Kowalski with the bases loaded and one out. Mike Cruz tried scoring on the hit but was thrown out at home and then after Ryan Bird was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, CJ Lang flew out to center field to end the threat.
The Rebels' final run of the game came in the eighth inning when Willie Bowman doubled in Michael Brenly to make the score 8-2. Miller finished the game going 2-5 with an RBI and Cruz went 3-3 including a double.
UNLV continues its season on the road and will be back in California to face another ranked team, this time a three-game series beginning Feb. 10 against No. 9 Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton.
