Fullerton, Calif. - The UNLV softball team (13-16) dropped its split doubleheader Thursday afternoon in the Judi Garman Classic held in Fullerton, Calif. The Rebels faced the top-ranked Arizona Wildcats (24-1) first and fell in the 7-0 contest. In game two, the Matadors of Cal State Northridge (11-7) got the best of the Rebels in the 5-1 affair.
In game one, the Rebels were blanked by No. 1/1 Arizona, 7-0. The Wildcats plated single runs in the first and fourth innings before opening their lead to a seven-run margin with five runs in the fifth. The Rebels were unable to notch a hit against UA's Taryne Mowatt (11-1) as she went the distance and improved to 11-1 on the year. Shannon Crisp (6-7) suffered the loss.
Arizona scored its first run with help from a Caitlin Lowe triple to center. Autumn Champion brought Lowe home on a single down the left field line. The Wildcats made it 2-0 after their half of the fourth with help from two hits. Laine Roth opened the inning with a single through the left side. A sacrifice bunt moved Sam Banister, who entered as a pinch-runner for Roth, to second. Lowe knocked a single up the middle which scored Banister from second.
In the fifth inning, the Wildcats broke the game open with five runs on five hits and one UNLV error. All five hits were recorded as singles, while a sacrifice fly aided in one of the five runs to score.
Caitlyn Paus was the lone Rebel to reach base as her pop-up to third base was dropped by Arizona's third baseman. Paus was left stranded and was the lone runner for the Rebels in the game.
In game two, the Rebels faired no better against Cal State Northridge. UNLV jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the third, but the Matadors knotted the score with a run in their half. CSUN added two runs in both the fifth and the sixth innings to push its lead to 5-1.
UNLV plated the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly hit by Kendall Fearn, which scored Brittany Bolinger. With one out, Bolinger walked and advanced to third on a double hit by Maggie Livreri. Crisp loaded the bases with a walk and Fearn followed with the sac fly.
CSUN used two Rebel errors and no hits to plate the tying run in the third.
In the fifth, a triple with one out helped put the eventual go-ahead run on base. Following the triple, a single to left scored what would be the winning run. CSUN got three hits and one Rebel error to bring across the two runs in the inning.
A double in the sixth inning brought home runners from first and second after the runners reached on a single and a fielder's choice.
Crisp (6-8) suffered her second loss of the day as she threw 2.1 innings of relief after Christie Robinson began the game. Robinson tossed 2.2 innings and left the circle with the score tied at 1-1. Becky McDonald closed out the game, as she threw the final inning.
