Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - UNLV baseball grabbed an early lead but could not hold it in losing 10-3 to the University of San Diego on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game series at Cunningham Stadium.

UNLV led 3-1 after the first inning and a half but USD scored the next nine runs of the game in getting the win, dropping the Rebels to 12-14 on the year, with starter Kevin Skogley (1-3) taking the loss. It was the ninth-straight road loss for the Rebels, who are 1-10 now away from home and 11-4 at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Torero starter Matt Couch (6-2) settled in and kept the Rebels off the scoreboard the next five innings in helping USD move to 17-10 on the year.

The Rebels got on the board in the first inning on a ground out by Keith Smith that scored Mike Cruz, but USD tied it the next inning on a two-out single. UNLV then retook the lead in the top of the second, getting a run on a solo home run from Chad Miller and then a single by CJ Lang that scored Ryan Kowalski, making the score 3-1.

Skogley though fell victim to two-out hits again in the second and the third, with USD scoring a pair of runs in each frame with two outs, including a two-run home run by Shane Buschini in the third. Skogley only lasted four innings before giving way to Matt Luca, who was making just his second appearance of the year.

Luca gave up three runs in the fifth and then a solo home run in the sixth that made the score 9-3 before he turned the ball over to Xavier Scruggs in the seventh. Scruggs closed out the game for the Rebels, allowing another run in the eighth.

Lang, Kowalski and Braden Walker each had two hits in the game for the Rebels and Lang also scored a run and had an RBI. UNLV finished the game with 10 hits and two errors while USD had 12 hits and a pair of errors as well.

UNLV and USD wrap up their series Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (PST) with the game being broadcast on KSHP 1400 AM.
