Rebels Finish 28th At NCAA Championships

LAS VEGAS - UNLV finished in 28th place as the final day of competition concluded on Saturday at the 2006 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center.

UNLV finished with 18 points, and just barely missed out on a chance to add to their overall point total in the 400 yard free relay, as the Rebels' relay squad finished in 17th place in a time of 2:57.64, just .30 seconds out of qualifying for the Saturday night scoring heats. Swimming on the relay was Richard Hortness, Brandon Nelms, Joe Bartoch, and John Byers.

Brandon Nelms also swam in the 100 yard free, and placed 53rd in a time of 45.08.

The Rebels' 18 points came from the first day of the meet, when their 200 yard free relay team finished in ninth place, the highest finish ever by a UNLV relay squad.

Entering the day in second place, Auburn jumped ahead of Arizona to claim the overall team title with a score of 480.50, while Arizona posted 440.50 points to earn runner-up honors. Stanford was third at 362.5. Also from the Mountain West Conference, Utah placed 26th (21 points), Air Force was 35th with 11 points, and BYU finished 41st with five points.
