SALT LAKE CITY - The UNLV softball team (15-26, 0-4 MWC) lost both games in Salt Lake City, Utah on Friday afternoon to the Utah Utes (20-10, 2-0 MWC) Utah used timely hitting and errors by the Rebel defense to break out in an 18-2 five-inning game-one win. Game two was a more defensive affair as the Utes got a solo home run in the fourth inning for the only run in the 1-0 contest.
In game two, Becky McDonald (1-2) held the Utah batters to only four hits in her 6.0 innings of work. The only mistake that she made was in allowing a home run to Devina Quintero in the fourth inning. She forced Utah to leave five runners on-base.
Meghan Dyer (10-3) held UNLV to only two hits in the contest. Dyer struck out eight and walked three. The Rebels left four runners on the base paths.
In game one, Utah could do nothing wrong at the plate. The offense pounded out 18 runs on 11 hits and used five Rebel errors to help extend its offensive. The Utes took a 6-0 lead after one inning of play and added four runs in the fourth and eight in the fourth for their 18.
UNLV's two runs came as a result of a Bri Bernardi two-run home run. Caitlyn Paus was sitting on first base when the shot cleared the center field fence.
Shannon Crisp (7-13) suffered the loss for UNLV as she threw 4.0 innings in the run-ruled game. She allowed all 11 hits and only nine of the 18 runs allowed were earned. She walked five and struck out one.
